Every company has two org charts. One of them is bullshit.

Every org has a formal chart (HR system, reporting lines, budget authority) and a shadow one that actually drives decisions—who gets consulted before commitments are made, whose opinion the VP seeks, who can quietly block initiatives. The formal chart reflects titles; the shadow chart reflects trust, track record, and influence built over time. Navigating organizations effectively requires reading the real power map, not the published one. Misreading it—going through official channels when the actual decision-maker is elsewhere—wastes time and goodwill.
